Who Is Eating All The Damn Donuts?

This morning the husband and I decided to go out for donuts.  We don't eat them all that frequently, and haven't gone out for them since we moved into our house last year.  So, where to go? I popped open Google and searched for donut shops in our area.  There were so many choices  that my husband had to open Yelp! on his iPhone to read reviews to figure out which shop from the myriad of choices would be a good place to go.  If I'm going to suck it up and eat 12,000 calories for breakfast, I want to make sure I'm getting bang for my buck.

map

When I say there are a myriad of choices... I mean there are, according to both Google and Yahoo, over 112 donut shops within a 10 mile radius of my home.  This doesn't include the supermarkets, quickie marts, or vending machines that sell donuts.  I mean donuts are tasty and all, especially those old fashioned glazed buttermilk ones, but a minimum of 112 stores selling them within 5 minutes of my home?  Seriously?

I did a double take. Is the demand for donuts really that high?  Especially in California - birthplace of the health food craze and home to thousands of anorexic would-be starlets?  Are there enough people out there eating donuts to warrant over 112 shops in a 10 mile radius?

So I did a little research and found that the top 10 suppliers of fresh donuts moved close to $1 billion worth of deep fried breakfast treats last year. This isn't including all the prepackaged ones or the mom and pop shops who make their own!  There's another couple hundred million bucks worth of those sold annually as well. To top it off, the sales figures have increased, by some estimates, over 17% in the last year.

So seriously, I ask ya, who is eating all the damn donuts?

Seriously... who is eating all the damn donuts? Is it you?
it's the donut demons....
I only eat Krispy Kreme....OMG yummy....
Conservatives use them in demonstrations showing how the socialists left the hole from distributing out the dough.
Chuck & Harry - Could donuts be the food of the darkside?

WalkAwayHappy - Those are good, but they are too light and fluffy - I err on the side of cake ones with lots of glaze.
Cheney has three dozen in house right now. What does that tell you?? He says he likes to hunt them because "the fuckers don't move on ya!"
Well, with the increase in police forces and homeland security . . . just sayin' . . .
Oh, and Stevey Seagal has got to be a huge part of the explanation. His ever-expanding waistline could maintain three donut shops on all its own.
“Seriously... who is eating all the damn donuts?”

Do you live in the neighborhood of Springfield, perchance? A certain Homer J. Simpson comes to mind . . . ;-)

Harry - this explains so much... Cheney's heart problem... and Senor Segal... well... he was with the CIA wasn't he?
It's Obama's fault. He's trying to indoctrinate us with his socialist donut plans. Next thing you know, he'll start feeding them to our kids in school.
Owl - I did drive-by a donut shop once where there were about 15 cop cars in the parking lot. Turned out the shop next door had been robbed - but it put me in a fit of giggles to see them all insitu.

Grandma... ah yes, he is a good candidate.

grif - The kids would love that!
Seagull is a lawman, don'cha know! Check the link.
It is me. I miss L.A., where we drive fast, live fast, and eat fast donuts. xox
People eat them to fill emotionally void places...or...their cops.
They say that one day, all of us will have a Starbucks in our yards. Seems like donut vendors have already started that trend.

I'm dying of suspense -- did you find a good donut joint how and were their donuts? You obviously left a big hole in this story.

John- The highest rated place was closed for the holiday - so we went with #2. They were pretty good, although I could have used a wee bit more sugary goodness on my old fashioned buttermilk. No one really makes them the way they used to. When I was a kid and the milkman would deliver milk and fresh donuts in the morning... that is what I keep looking for!
I thought you 'merikans wore those donuts on your hips for wamth ...sheesh, what WAS I thinking.
funny, I've been wondering where all the donut stores went!! Obviously, to NorCal, based on your maps. Here in southern SoCal there aren't any anymore. Used to be zillions -- tiny mom and pop great spots, Winchells chain, lots and lots of others -- and now none, not even crappy Dunkin Donuts. Winchell's had drive-thrus! Now you've got to like scones or something (there hasn't been a good scone in the New World ever, IMO.) Just when I want a perfect, nongreasy, cake donut or one of those buttermilk ones...nada. I'm going to have to move up. And I've been just looking for an excuse... ;- )
JK - don't be actin' all innocent y'all have Tim Horton's on every corner :)
sorry. not NorCal -- more like North LA. I was thinking Bay Area. They're all in the Valley??
femme - I live in Los Angeles - this map is the San Fernando Valley! You must be living in one of those carb free zip codes ;)
You can get donuts here at the grocery store bakeries, but there's only one actual official Donut Shop in town. It's easily identified because there are always half-a-dozen (baker term) old guys sitting out in front drinking coffee eating donuts talking -- 102 degree heat or freezing cold -- every morning, coffee & donuts. (just reading this post makes me want an apple fritter...mmmm!)
Damn, I'd have a witty comment if I wasn't so depressed by this - just read an interesting piece on autism on HuffPo re diet and environmental impacts on kids. The donut culture is a big part of this; if you've heard how sugar contributes to an overproduction of yeast in your body, which leads to all SORTS of problems, that's just one thing. Depressing. Want a donut now.
San Diego County. Swear to god -- none left. Every Winchell's is gone, ever Dunkin' gone, even the Krispy Kreme I knew about is gone. Linda's in PB is only open until they sell out -- usually at 7:00 AM. Lots of bagel stores once thriving are gone, too. I don't see any lack of fat people (she says, looking at her ass over her shoulder), so maybe they're all eating tacos instead. Gave up carbs for fat? ;- )
nurses, cnas, and lpns- no, really
femme - I'm afraid you might be seeing the world through donut free glasses... I did a Yahoo! search of San Diego and came up with over 180 donut shops! Granted, it doesn't match with the San Fernando Valley... but you ain't donut free down south! Plus, you have more churros being that close the border ;)
donut-free zone is right. I did a search on google and there isn't a peach-colored blob for miles from the ff abode. looks like a nuke went off here and killed all the donuts. the bad news: those 180 donut shops are reeeeeally far from me except (the good news) there is ONE in a strip mall about 6 miles away I didn't know existed. Wonder if they're open this late?
You sure do live in a donut-rich environment. I doubt there are more than 80 donut places within 10 miles of me, but then I live in a red state; I'll bet we've got you beat for gun shops. But the numbers here are frightening; I wonder if the 17% rise in donut consumption is tied to the economic crisis. Has anybody done a doctoral dissertation yet on the link between increased consumption of sugary fried dough and financial hardship?
I do believe there are so many donut shops for the same reason I wanted to open a pizza shop when I was a teenager (I wanted to eat as much as I wanted!).

"those old fashioned glazed buttermilk ones" - I'm with you on this!
Donuts...yummy I used to work at a Take n Bake pizza shop and right next door was a family run donut shop. They made their donuts at night so we would sneek and go over and trade a small pizza for a small amount of donuts and they were fresh made and OMG I haven't bought any since as those were so freakin good oh man....... Nice memories.........girl how far are you from Modesto? I am outside that area and I think we may be within driving distance one of these days!!!!!
Oh crap I just read you live in The LA area so never mind! I blame this on my daughter coming into town last night at 7pm with the new grandbaby and me getting up at 4am to go to work and what day of the week is this!!!! Now where were we..........oh yeah DONUTS!
"...a myriad of choices"

PUH-leeze, don't associate me with donuts. Never eat the things...
nanatehay - actually one of the articles I read said that they think the 17% increase is, in part, due to people seeking cheap comfort food as a result of the crisis. They also indicated that some vendors have reduced or removed the transfats and reduced the portion sizes, which may make more people interested in eating them.
The nearest place that sells fresh donughts is Wal-Mart and that's a 20 mile drive across a mountain into Colorado. So it ain't me!
